I was thinking about "debut" albums the other day!

There have been some outstanding debut albums through the decades, and I was wondering what the membership here counts as some of their favourites.

For me, the following stand out as I play them consistently.

Mike Oldfield - Tubular bells
Phoebe Snow - Phoebe Snow
America - America
Boston - Boston
Keb' Mo' - Keb' Mo'
Steve Forbert - Alive On Arrival
Dire Straits - Dire Straits
Alan Parsons - Tales of Mystery and Imagination
Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales
John Mayer - Room For Squares

And here is a bonus question simply for reading this thread.

Is Tubular Bells the greatest debut album ever?

I would have to nominate "Maybe you've been brainswashed too", by the New Radicals. Sadly the only album they ever released. Brilliant stuff.

Great choice and I concur 100%!

One of the albums I absolutely adore is also an "only album" this band ever recorded. I didn't post it as the vast majority of people are completely unfamiliar with it, but it's a Quebec-based folk-prog album by a former member of Harmonium.....Fiori-Seguin - Deux Cents Nuits a l'heure. It's actually in my TOP 5 all-time fave albums.

I would add the following debut albums:

Marc Cohn - Marc Cohn
Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More
Traci Chapman - Traci Chapman

Marc Cohn (mind the spelling) was a phenomenal first release - used to spin it all the time. Remember "walking in Memphis?"

I do indeed....sold...on my list!:D

Hi John. Hope all is well.

Taking on your bonus question first, well, of course it's a flavor choice but, given your avatar, Texas Flood is right up there with the best of all time. Having stated that, I'd personally go with the first effort of the godfathers of prog and nominate ITCOTCK.

As to excellent debuts, I peaked at my music collection and came up with a handful:

Änglagård, Hybris
Barclay James Harvest, Barclay James Harvest
Blackfield, Blackfield
Boston, Boston
Brand X, Unorthodox Behavior
Bruce Springsteen, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
DJ Shadow, Endtroducing...
Earth, Wind & Fire, Earth, Wind & Fire
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Gentle Giant, Gentle Giant
Jeff Beck, Truth
Jeff Buckley, Grace
Joe Jackson, Look Sharp
Joe Satriani, Not Of This Earth
King Crimson, In The Court Of The Crimson King
Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin
Little Richard, Here’s Little Richard
Lynyrd Skynyrd, pronounced 'leh-'nerd 'skin-'nerd
Marillion, Script For A Jester’s Tear
Mary J. Blige, What’s The 411?
Massive Attack, Blue Lines
Moon Safari, A Doorway To Summer
Norah Jones, Come Away With Me
Patti Smith, Horses
Pink Floyd, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Portishead, Dummy
Premiata Forneria Marconi (P.F.M.), Storia Di Un Minuto
Procol Harum, Procol Harum
Roxy Music, Roxy Music

Hi Ron - I'm well and really digging some "special music", Blackfield, Emiliana Torrini and Dark Matter especially.

Here's another - Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends

Hi John. Dark Matter is brilliant, living at the intersection of Genesis Avenue & Pink Floyd Street.

Wow Ron, I ordered Barclay James Harvest's debut last month. Excellent remaster and a very curiously over looked work.
