Daniel Hertz will soon be selling a Mac-only app called Master Class. It has a feature, called "A+," that purports to make PCM audio sound like analog. In addition, Master Class includes an equalizer that, according to the press release, is superior to the Cello Palette, at least in certain respects.

Here's the press release:

After the Red Rose Music fiasco, should we believe anything ML says? Or might there be something to the features in this software?

What happened during the "fiasco"? Can you elaborate?

Is the A+ just a version of the Burwen Bobcat software PCM enhancer, now for MAC? I have heard about this partnership and the same promises since the Red Rose Music.

P.S. I would like to try this music player but I suspect the price will be quite high.

Reportedly, the speakers and amplifiers that Red Rose sold were re-badged versions of Chinese models already on the market in the United States at a small fraction of the Red Rose prices. The company quickly failed.

What you should believe, if a digital player is being reported to "sound analog," is that there is, at best, equalization and/or compression involved, at worst, some other form of added harmonic content, and you should evaluate the value of the product accordingly.

Or, perhaps, simply the power of suggestion.;)

Why do all those involved in making digital products use " sounds like analogue" as a marketing tool .
Why does none of them tackles the problem head on and invests/researches in making a sota real analogue machine from the start.
With some of these digital products costing 100 K , I bet a very nice r2r productionmmachine could be offered for that , It ll serve both the audiophile community plus the recording industry

Not sure how there could be tubes in a digital audio player, but their harmonic content could certainly be emulated.

Tim,

Although the press release is filled with fantasy claims and sometimes is even ridiculous, it never says a that "a digital player is being reported to "sound analog" ." It says "With A+, the listening experience is much more like analog. Since the introduction of digital audio, many people have noted that, despite its convenience, the actual listening experience is not as enjoyable as analog formats like the LP and analog tape."

Forgetting about his trade adventures and excessively passionate side, Mark Levinson is really an interesting and knowledgeable audio persona. I had the pleasure of meeting him and debating his ideas at the Cello period, and it was a very enjoyable and enlightening happening.
