Saying ‘Bye Bye’ to the Everly Brothers’ Phil, 1939-2014

So sad. Our musical heroes (don't like that word though) are passing away.....one by one and much too fast for my liking.
The really sad thing is that we used to take this type of talent for granted because we were so spoiled with so much great music in the 1950s, 1960s, and into the 1970s. Then along came manufactured talent which had no real talent. 'Singers' who couldn't really sing a single note on key were manufactured into pop stars and of course this is still continuing today. Lots of todays pop star wonders would have been given a boot in the ass on their way out of the studio door in the old days after a very brief audition.

And what about the great talents in the 50s, 60s, & 70s that were never properly recognized: anyone remember Phil Ochs.
I saw him in person in the smallest of clubs around 1965.
Phil Ochs performed by himself [voice & guitar], and you really heard the true voice. That performance was probably the best SOLO performance I witnessed in my lifetime [my date was flabbergasted].

Yes, there are a lot of "singers" today that are lousy, but I think there are many many great ones. Today's music scene is so cutthroat that many great performers are taken with a grain of salt. There are so many talented musicians out there, that it is almost a requirement to have a gimmick in order to get noticed. Fabulous singers abound, but there are so many of them and we are so inundated with them, that what would have been considered extraordinary back in the 50's, 60's and 70's is just ordinary and almost commonplace today. Also, if you don't have support from the industry, forget about it.

Steve-You may be right, but I don't see the major labels signing up great talent. I see them signing up a "look" and building a brand from there. I find the opposite of your argument to be true in that we have far too many current 'stars' with no talent compared to the true talent we used to have. Of course I could be dead wrong and it's just my opinion.
I totally agree with you that many 'stars' have very little talent. The majors are always just looking for what will make them the most money! I remember from way back when it was said that the people who basically determined who the popular 'stars' of the day were the 13 - 16 year olds, who bought the popular albums. What taste do they have when it comes to good music? lol Sadly, the many great artists we have today are never going to be the 'popular' choice, but we can do our part by purchasing their music and we do.
How true Myles. The Everly Brothers were amongst the earliest of acts that I appreciated as rock and roll.
I guess it's good that when we look back on that era, we remember Elvis, the Everlys and Buddy Holly, and forget that they shared the top of the charts with Pat Boone, Debbie Reynolds and Paul Anka...all manufactured talent. Hopefully 60 years from now, folks will look back and remember the real talent of today and not the manufactured pop stars, but who knows? It could be that we're just that much smarter than this generation and they'll look back and see Justin Bieber as the artistic summit of their generation. in the meantime, I wish those kids would get offa my lawn.
