That's what I was wondering and that's not made clear. Usually they were also ventricular assist devices. The issues was always the destruction of the blood cells caused by the artificial hearts pumping action. I wonder if they've gotten around that since the older artificial hearts were in many cases bridge devices until a suitable donor could be found. This seems to be for older patients who aren't eligible for a heart transplant.
