Oh yeah agree with you both that there is no guarantee expensive means good, and definitely not all cable manufacturers are equal.
I remember one of the best USB cables Paul Miller tested was a £5 for 1m cable and was superior to several much more expensive ones (Paul Miller did an article on this as well), ironically this cable is no longer available and that makes me laugh at the madness of it no longer for sale.

But I must admit there are a few high end brands I am a fan of depending upon the system-speakers.
