Installing VHF radio is not hard but there are a few basics involved. Here is a good starter video on that.


Note that despite what he says, higher is not always better on a boat with respect to antenna. Yes, you will get more range but if the antenna moves left and right too much because it is too high and the boat is pitching and rolling due to wave action, then you will get variable range which is not a good thing. Ditto for too much "gain" in the antenna.

It is always scary for people to drill into their boats and install/route wires and such. So here is a decent video to provide details on that relative to installing the VHF radio antenna on the roof of the boat. He is doing this on a hard-top. If you are drilling into a sealed cabin, then I would use "clam" waterproof connectors as opposed to simple sealant he uses for waterproofing:
