the Helen Merrill is the SHM CD from Japan, and the Groovy is the XRCD which i much prefer to my old RVG Remaster (which i much prefer to my 1990s scratchy CD). The Mahler is an Esoteric remastering...really, really enjoy that one.

The Clash - London Calling
Lydia Lunch - Queen of Siam
X - Wild Gift
X - Under the Big Black Sun
Meat Puppets - II
Screaming Trees - Clairvoyance
Meat Puppets - Huevos
Meat Puppets - Mirage
Beat Happening - Jamboree
Dinosaur Jr. - Bug
Screaming Trees - Invisible Lantern
Meat Puppets - Monsters
Mudhoney - Mudhoney

Are you buying these new? As you likely know, a lot of these you listed have been remastered for reasons that have nothing to do with sound quality. The earlier versions will almost certainly sound better.

It's a bit of pain to have to search for used, pre-loudness CD's, but worth it.

A few examples:

Sonic Youth:

X:

Bob Seger:

Yes, all of these are bought new as cheap as possible on amazon. They are used as background music during the day and not intended for serious listening purposes as all of them go on a macbook pro using jriver's shuffle mode with adaptive volume and volume leveling enabled.

Got it. You'd still benefit with the better mastering, even if for background listening. Plus, if you select the better mastered versions, you'll build up one heck of a quality collection over time that will last for years. Just my 2 cents.

And you probably already know this, but there's more to it than just volume loudness and leveling. The problem has to do with dynamic range, and volume leveling can't help this.

FWIW, here are a few recommendations:

This is the 1994 UPC still available new. The recent 2013 reissue has been compressed to hell.
Bob Seger-GreatestHits
DR

Still available new:
The Police-GreatestHits1992
DR

Used:
The Police-ZenyattaMondatta
DR

The original X-Wild Gift is rare, so this 2 album version is a good option:
Los Angeles/Wild Gift
DR

X-Under the Big Black Sun early w/o bonus tracks

I've spent a lot of hours researching disc details (UPC, dates, etc.) of every CD I purchase, might as well share a little of what I've learned.

Great stuff, Mr. Acoustat! Which one is your favorite? Quintessence or You Must Believe in Spring? (could not tell from the formatting on my screen of your albums).
