Looking at the last PPT, some of his observations can be explained with jitter, which although emphemeral in nature, meaning nanoseconds or even less in duration, creates all kinds of juicy and readily audible artifacts. When the noise floor drops, it's just like the tide going out... all the junk on the bottom comes into view.

In general, human sensory systems are close to quantily sensitive for the modality in question (meaning small numbers of photons, molecules, etc.). If you start considering phase differences, as in the PPT, things could very subtle indeed.

And keep in mind that octopi are very, very smart. Just try catching one, even the ones that aren't psychic :)
