Nothing in the world, not gold, not diamonds, not fame or fortune, is worth more than your health. In fact it is our over indulgence that is putting us at risk. Individuals who are 40% overweight have double the risk of dying prematurely than a normal weight person. Couple that with recent estimates that 60% of the US population is overweight (using DEXA, not the useless parameter BMI) along with the rate of every other obesity linked disease on the rise (diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, Alzheimers, etc.) and the only conclusion we can come to is that we’re deep in the throes of a burgeoning and growing epidemic. In short, we’re eating ourselves to death.
With doctors now estimating the human lifespan to be on the order of 115 years, we’re, if we’re only living to only 75 years of age, tossing away one-third of our life. And the keys to staying both physically and mentally young and having not only a longer but better quality of life are activity, exercise and nutrition. Or as we’re fond to say, “you don’t stop moving when you get old but you get old when you stop moving. “ In the coming months, this forum will focus on topical health related subjects including resistance training (how to select a gym and trainer, basic physiological and cardiovascular responses to mechanical stress, programming, different training modalities, training with different issues such as back and shoulder issues, arthritis, joint replacement, mental health, etc.), nutrition (basic elements to healthy eating) and last but not least, motivation factors (psychology, goal setting, overcoming mental blocks and fight or flight responses, etc.).
