What was so amazing about Adolph "Bud" Herseth was that he was the top voice of one of the world's great (maybe greatest) orchestral brass section.....of all time.....yes, maybe Solti let the brass play a little to loud, but heck, if I had been an orchestral conductor in the late 1960's/early 1970's I would have let such an ensemble rip. To hear the ultimate CSO brass sound, listen to the 1971 recording of Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique.....4th movement......this recording, IMHO, is one of Wilkie's absolute best.....the stunning acoustics of the Krannert Center's hall are captured with a sound that is still begging for a superb hi rez treatment...RIP Bud, and show Heaven's orchestra how a principal trumpet is supposed to sound!!
