FWIW my Pacific with 242's REALLY didn't like the Riviera AIC-10, my TotalDAC was a MUCH better match.
I assume it was an impedance mismatch, but I'd never heard such a dramatic impact on what the amp could do.
I'd borrowed the AIC, so I didn't try swapping output tubes on the Pacific, to see if...
I was quoted minimum input Impedance for the downstream component of 20K Ohms with PX25's.
Less that that and the volume control can have issues, notably at some changes volume moves in the wrong direction.
I suspect that because professed preferences are based purely on experience, there is a tendency to incorrectly identify why you prefer say piece A over piece B. piece A maybe obviously wetter than B, bit it may be a different aspect of the production that is drawing you to it.
i.e. Your...
Another thing I've found through my own experiences are that what I describe as what I like isn't always what I find I like.
It's extremely easy to lie to yourself about your sound preferences.
Over the last half dozen years I've noticed that I often prefer a dryer sound than I had often...
I don't think you can ever know the former, I did take a detour down this route in the 90's, buying actual studio equipment and mostly disliking it.
Obviously the mastering has a lot to do with how enjoyable things can be.
The pleasing part is I guess the crux of it, I think for me at least...
I agree entirely on the all hear much the same but value different aspects of reproduction differently.
I personally am not generally trying to recreate live performances though.
Perhaps for some subset of the music I listen to, but a lot is really about the reproduction of studio recordings in...
I have a KR RK 5U4G, I also have an anniversary edition 5U4G, prefer the former. I’ve also run RCA NOS 5U4G’s in it, and prefer the KR’s.
I have quads of KR RK242’s, PX25’s and T100’s, use the 242’s, the trade off is dynamics vs midrange weight and somewhat larger stage. But they all still...
I use an optical rendu via USB, I actually preferred that to the NS1 over AES, but it was pretty close.
Mine did have the older Amanero board which is replaced as a part of the upgrade.
Alright mine arrived back from Poland Friday evening.
Some initial impressions based on a whopping 2 or 3 hours listening to it, and of course there is no way to directly compare, so it's based on my memory.
Short version it's a significant step up IMO.
It’s overall more ethereal sounding...
The LAN connection was literally just a Raspberry PI3 bridged to the USB board.
The PI3 did have a very good PSU and the tray it was in provided some shielding.
I used it for a while, but I found using a good USB source directly to be superior.
There are a few impressions towards the end of the Pacific thread.
Generally they all seem extremely positive.
I should have mine back early next week, cleared customs yesterday.
That’s great, I’d assumed the issue was with DHL.
I’m up in the Pacific Northwest, Been working with Rob at Lampizator NA for the last couple of weeks to get a shipping label.
Mines in for the Pac2 upgrade and what I think is a bad relay in the volume control.
Really looking forwards to giving...
Yes, my primary concern was shipping it.
I’ve had good luck in international shipping and bad, hoping for a smooth experience this time around.
Out of interest, how long did it take.
Looking forwards to getting mine back.
