Is there something we can do with "What's spinning tonight" thread?

Frank, if you will, just let us know how we can help you to help all who are interested in achieving this goal. There are many folks interested in seeing this happen. Thank you for your efforts.

Thanks, Tom. It's going well, I bogged down badly with the effort in the first round, trying to sort out too many fiddly things, and trying to get too many things right. The curse of the (wanting to be) perfectionist!! I've got a new lease of energy on it now, thanks to the responses of everyone! Plus, I'm using a different approach now, which is helping a great deal: at times I have to play "games" with my brain, do things one way versus another, pick the right way through to achieve a decent conclusion.

But one thing that needs to be decided is how public should this material be? If posted, a casual passerby gets the full benefit of the members' efforts, including my first stage of it. Is this what is wanted, or should material be sent around via PM's?

I can make it invisible to all but members. I agree with your concern. Thanks

Another thing to decide, is what the genres are going to be, and even if some subdivision, or multiple entries makes sense. Before someone starts madly filling in! Uniformity is good!! :b

So, need to agree on a list that covers everything: say, Classical, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Popular, Other, as a naive first suggestion. To make life easy for filling in blanks, then agree on a simple one character code for each one: so, C, J, B, R, P, O for the above. That's all that's needed, because a trivial fiddle with OpenOffice at the end can convert all the codes into meaningful names.

So suggestions for genre breakdown, please!

Thanks,
Frank

Gee whiz, Bob, slow down, slow down ...!!

It would be easy to add another column, for Sub-genre, next to Genre, which people could fill in as they wish, or leave blank if they're not interested in such. If we do include it as a serious addition, then it's probably worthwhile to nail down a precise set of categories, entries in that column, so that there is no (or less!) confusion.

Further thoughts ...??

I am sorry, it was simply a precision on sub-genres.
My intention was to help, and not to complicate things.

Then I agree, simply pick the main styles of music and that's fine by me.

Way too much. Keep it simple. Folks will learn where their favorite genres are located, and what type(s) of music fall into each category very quickly.

No worries, Bob, it's all good! :b

Again, there's no problem adding another, secondary column, no skin off my back: if most people leave it blank that's fine; if people who are enthusiastic about adding finer detail, like yourself, wish to do so that's easily accommodated. So suggestions about sub-genres are fine, so long as you clearly distingush that from the key genre classification scheme -- main thing would be to try and lock down, set in concrete a list of sub-genres pretty quickly, so that it doesn't become a mess, and hence worthless ...

Having just looked at AllMusic, I can see where the musical subfora in WBF came from (possibly). A thought is that that website separates the following:

Pop/Rock
R&B
Blues

Seeing that a high percentage of albums spun on this thread fall into these categories, does it make sense to have any of these as main Genre at all?

Add Jazz and Classical and I think we have something that we could all live with. I do kind of like the idea of adding one column for a sub-genre, but it's not something that's essential for me. Good work so far, Frank!

Thanks, John. As Steve suggested, and my extension of that would now be:

Pop/Rock
R&B
Blues
Jazz
World
Classical

AllMusic has some nice sub-genres for, say, Jazz; neatly set up: e.g. African, Big Band, Fusion, New Orleans, etc -- if people want to go that way ...

The WORLD genre I forgot about, but certainly is needed IMO. Having said that, I would then definitely add a sub-genre. I suppose NEW AGE would then be listed as WORLD/NEW AGE. I can live with that.

The new word of this new age is called Indie.

I don't think Enya, Vangelis, Loreena McKennitt et al would fit the INDIE label though.
